Walking in Their Shoes: How GERT Training is Transforming Care at Majesticare

At Majesticare, we’re committed to delivering passionate and exceptional care - rooted in empathy, understanding, and true connection. That’s why, as part of our reflections during Dementia Awareness Week, we’re proud to share the rollout of a powerful new training initiative across our homes: GERT Training.
What is GERT?
The GERonTologic Simulator (GERT) is an innovative age simulation suit that allows younger individuals to experience the age-related changes commonly faced by older adults. By physically simulating these challenges, GERT helps caregivers and support teams build deeper awareness and sensitivity toward the physical limitations and discomforts many residents live with daily.
What Does GERT Simulate?
Wearing the GERT suit replicates a variety of age-related challenges, including:
Opacity of the eye lens
Narrowing of the visual field
High-frequency hearing loss
Head mobility restrictions
Joint stiffness
Loss of strength
Reduced grip ability
Reduced coordination skills
This kind of immersive learning makes the challenges our residents face far more real, and far more relatable, for our team members.
Building Deeper Understanding Through Experience
To elevate the impact, we’ve combined GERT Training with cognitive empathy exercises, focusing on what it’s like to live with conditions such as dementia. This dual approach enhances not only our physical understanding but also our emotional insight - allowing us to care more thoughtfully, patiently, and respectfully.
Our Memory Care Nurse, Suyi, shared his powerful experience:
“Wearing this made me realise how our residents feel 24/7. I found just simple actions such as lifting my feet or raising my arm to drink so difficult—and it has really made me appreciate the support people require.”
