Smile Garden Created in Loving Memory of Wife
A very special garden has taken shape at Cavendish Park, created with love, remembrance and a desire to give something back to a community that has meant so much to one family.
David’s wife, Heather, lived within the Memory Care Community at Cavendish Park for five years. Following Heather’s passing, David chose to maintain his connection with the home by becoming a volunteer, and that connection has since grown into something incredibly special.
For the past six months, David has been lovingly creating the Smile Garden in Heather’s memory, transforming an outdoor space into somewhere residents, families and visitors can sit, reflect and remember the people who hold a special place in their hearts.
The idea began after David spoke with Mel, Home Manager at Cavendish Park, about what could be created in Heather’s honour. Together, they turned the idea into reality.
David has planted heather as a touching tribute to his wife, created a plaque featuring the word SMILE, and introduced a new bench where people can sit and enjoy the peaceful surroundings.
David said:
“I enjoy volunteering here. It’s nice to make contact with the team. I was inspired by my wife being here for five years. I talked to Mel, and we made it happen.”
What started with the Smile Garden has become an even bigger part of David’s volunteering at Cavendish Park. David has now taken the wider garden under his wing too, regularly spending time tidying and caring for the outdoor spaces for everyone to enjoy.
The garden is also becoming a welcoming place for some much smaller visitors.
A hedgehog home has been added to encourage wildlife into the garden and support natural slug management, while a bug garden has also been created to provide a habitat for insects and help encourage greater biodiversity within the grounds.
These thoughtful additions give the garden another purpose beyond creating a beautiful place to spend time. By making space for wildlife and supporting biodiversity, the project also contributes to Cavendish Park and Majesticare’s ESG commitments, showing how small, considered changes can help create a more sustainable environment.
David’s continued connection with Cavendish Park is about far more than gardening. It is a story of love, belonging and the relationships that remain long after circumstances change.
The Smile Garden gives people a place to pause. Somewhere to remember someone special, share a memory, enjoy a quiet moment or simply sit among the flowers and nature.
And at the heart of it all is Heather.
The heather planted in her name ensures that her story remains woven into a place that was part of her life for five years, while David’s generosity is creating new moments for other people every day.
David’s story beautifully reflects Heart, Family and Adventure from honouring someone deeply loved, to remaining part of the Cavendish Park community and finding new ways to make the garden an even richer place for people and wildlife.
